Obituary for Robert Oliveri

Robert Oliveri, of Freeport, suddenly, on May 6, 2019. Devoted son of the late Luciano and Jeanne Oliveri. Beloved brother of Richard (Gail), Ronald (Ann), Jeanne, Lucille Colucci (Marty) and the late Catherine Vitale. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Rob was the President of Baldwin Babe Ruth, Baldwin Little League, the Long Island Royals, ran the Baldwin Summer Program and coached and mentored many young men through their shared love of sports, especially baseball. Managing the L.I. Royals travel teams was a passion for Rob and he was proud to watch the boys grow into men and go on to successful careers, not just in High School and College ball, but life. When I think of Rob Oliveri, one word comes to mind... Champion. When I was younger I never felt accepted by most of my peers or that I was good enough to make the Royals Baseball Team... but then I met Rob and he made me feel welcomed into the family from day 1... He picked me and other players up for practice when my parents couldn't... he bought us McDonald's after we won (or lost) a game, he stayed late at the batting cages to teach me how to swing a bat properly and more importantly, he taught me how to be a winner and how to have confidence in myself when others didn't... I'll never forget the feeling of winning the championship in 2004 and what it meant for the town and my fellow teammates... the plaque he made for us still hangs in my room to this day along with the game ball and is the first thing I see when I visit home for the holidays... I even continue to use my original Royals baseball bag to this day (15 years later) because of the meaning that being a part of that team meant to me... That was one of the best summers of my childhood and it was all because of Rob's dedication to the team and our hometown. Not only did he set an example for me on the field, he also gave me my first "Real" job at the Baldwin Summer Camp and taught me how to handle responsibility by making me and several other players on our team supervisors at camp... He was ALWAYS looking for a way to make the town and the programs he was involved with better and that might be the most valuable lesson he's taught me in my adult life... always look to the future and try to make things better than they are today... show up first, leave last... think of others before yourself... Rob, you will be missed for so many reasons but your spirit will live on eternally. I wish that I could be there today with you and your family but no matter what, Baldwin and I will always remember #2 and the impact that you had on so many people. Rest in peace Rob, you will not be forgotten.

I was so saddened to hear of Rob's passing. My memories of him and his entire family all those years ago bring a smile to my face. They were very happy times. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
