Obituary for Harold P. Faskowitz

On behalf of brothers Andy and Bob we are saddened by the loss of our Dad Hal (Halco) Faskowitz. Although he will be missed we are relieved for him to find comfort that the degenerative illness (Parkinson’s) which has been sustained for a long time, he will no longer be suffering. We are also comforted that he has been reunited with our Mom and other loved ones in Heaven. In addition to us his sons he will be missed by; his brother Alan, Grandkids (Hunter, Cassie, Dylan and Jordan), His Nephew David and his two lovely Daughters in Law Kristen and Samantha.

Born in NYC on June 5th 1939. Dad grew up in the Bronx with our Grandparents "Dottie and George". He was a very athletic kid and after a year at a City Community School he joined the Army. Drilled into him at a young age to learn a trade, our Grandfather who had been in the music industry since the Great Depression had introduced him to the world of musical instrument repair at about age 12. Naturally gifted in anything mechanical, he had the opportunity to have apprenticeships with the finest NYC had to offer. Woodwind, Brass, String he had a gift for it all. However, he had a rebellious side.

He did not enjoy being an employee and by 22 he opened his first store. Soon he relocated to what was his first flagship store in Jackson Heights where he was the first Ibanez dealer in NYC. In his late 20's he met our Mom Harriet. They soon married, saved for a home and had first child Bob in 1969. That same year they moved to the suburbs in Long Island. Almost 5 years later was the arrival of 2nd son Andy.

He bought another building in Massapequa Park and opened a 2nd Halco Music. After many years of a fatiguing commute he closed the store in Jackson Heights and until our 20's had his store in Long Island. His Father, sons and wife all pitched in and spent time working in the store. Learning many skills ranging from business, sales and instrument repairs. Andy used his experience learning to overhaul Clarinets in he entrance essay to medical school. Which we now proudly refer to him as Dr. Andrew Faskowitz.

Our Dad was interesting that he often took his hobbies or what he felt to be injustice and took a portion of the store and for other business. So it was always a music store and; Dance Studio, Rehearsal Studio, Music Box and figurines, RV and Camping supplies, one of the first 50% greeting card stores and probably the most know the VHS rental store which became 1/3 of the store for many years. He was truly one of a kind. If you played an instrument in either our's or many surrounding school districts you likely rented your instrument from Hal. Many remember petting our dog Snowy while waiting.

Our Dad had many hobbies ranginging from; Paddle ball, Racquetball, Sport shooting, Golf, Boating, Camping, travel, photography, carpentry and countless other skills and interests. Many which have been passed down through the generations. Thanks for being a great provider, teacher, mentor and planting seeds that materialized into the people we are today.

May you rest in peace., Suffer no more and be reunited with our Mom and Grandparents. Love Andy and Bob
