Obituary for Michael T. Miller
Michael Thomas Miller – for all who knew him it was very clear what was most important in his life – God, Family and Country. He believed in doing the right thing always and if one needed guidance or reassurance, Mike was there for all with a helping hand.
Michael was born on May 8th,1925 to his loving parents Frank Aliano and Christina Somma Aliano. It was in this loving family and domestic church that Michael grew to understand the importance of faith and family and the strength of love. The family was to face major life crisis when shortly after the birth of Michael’s baby brother, Frankie, their dad passed away. It was some number of years after that that their mom, Christina, married Joseph Miller. They had another son together, and now Michael had two baby brothers, Frankie and Joey. And all the family became known as the Miller Family. Through all the years it was so evident that Michael was an adoring and devoted son to his mother and a strong and steadfast source of strength and love for his brothers.
Michael’s circle of love and family was multiplied exponentially when he met and married his “Treasure” his wife Ann. They have two daughters, Carol and Patricia and Michael was not shy to show his great love for Ann and his daughters and all their family. His true love was always Ann and he treasures and adores her. And even as his illness was taking him away from us, he never failed to remind his daughter Patricia, “Take Care of Mother!” He exemplified the good family man not only to his wife and daughters but to his grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and to all his extended family as well. How he loved them all and he always tried to make each one of them feel so special. Though he was a quiet faith-filled man, the Light of Christ he brought into the world was a huge beacon for so many not only for his family but to the larger community as well.
Michael served in the Aleutian Islands as an Aviation Radioman in the navy during World War II. In a letter he received from President Harry Truman on his discharge from the Navy at the close of the war, Michael was referred to as one of the Nation’s finest who undertook the most severe task one can be called upon to perform. He was cited for demonstrating the fortitude, resourcefulness and calm judgment necessary to carry out that task. And now President Truman said in this letter that “we now look to you for leadership and example in further exalting our country in peace.”
Michael seemed to take that message from President Truman to heart as he went on to become a staunch supporter of all our nation’s veterans working tirelessly through 60 plus years of service to the American Legion. His goal through that organization was to secure better services and opportunities for all those veterans who so deserved to be properly honored for their service to our country. Michael was well-respected in the American Legion and received many honors for his efforts on behalf of others.
Though our family would often tease our dad/grandfather about the way he held his Legion meeting nights as more important than anything else in life, in reality we all knew that to this wonderful Patriarch of our family, nothing was more important than family. And what a beautiful legacy of love Michael has brought into this world. Each one of us - his wife, daughters and scores of grandkids, great and great great grandkids are Blessed to have been loved by him. His love will live on in each of our hearts forever.
