A wife, a mother, a grandma too,
This is the legacy we have from you.
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a mother, not just as a grandmother.
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you've earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts, we'll eternally keep.
Nina Irma Young, a resident of Baldwin, New York, passed away on November 18th, 2020 at 6:45am at the age of 89. She passed away somewhat unexpectedly at Nassau University Medical Center. Nina Irma Young was born in San Fernando, Trinidad to Iris Millina George on May 12th, 1931. As a young girl, she attended and graduated Fyzabad Intermediate School in Trinidad. Nina married Austin Tuitt on December 10th, 1960. At that time she lived in La Romaine, Trinidad. She later migrated to the United States with the two youngest of her eight children where she made her home in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to retiring and moving to Baldwin with her son Deryck and his family, Nina worked as a Nanny for approximately fifteen years. Before that she was a Daycare provider and also worked as a home attendant. She was a seamstress, wonderful cook and home maker. Nina was also provider and a fantastic mother, who instilled life lessons of responsibility and love for others. Her door/kitchen was always open to all of Deryck and Anrill’s friends and later to her grandchildren and their friends. She was extremely hardworking, kind, humble and gracious. She loved to have music, laughter and life around her. Even when she was close to the end and couldn’t respond verbally, she would respond to the beat of the music her son and grandchildren played by her bedside. Nina left her mark on everyone she met. Nina is preceded in death by her ex-husband, Austin Tuitt and son, Selwin Young Nina is survived by her children Deryck Young and his wife Julie Young, Anrill Tuitt, Alvin Young, Kathleen Gomez, Patricia Cross, Mearl Cross, Linda Cross, many grandchildren and great grand children, including Deryck Young II, Kandyce Young, Jayden Young, Alyssa Young, Caroleen Wagstaff, Sedraah Gomez, Joanne Chambers, Shakieya Gant, and so many other grand and great grand children. So many they could comprise a small town. In closing, I would like to share this poem with you: Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft starlight at night. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. Nina Irma Young, thank you for being part of our lives. We are all going to miss you.
