Obituary for Loretta V. Halpin (Maginnis)

Loretta Maginnis Halpin (10/29/1933-07/29/2020) Growing up in St Albans Queens, she attended Bishop McDonnell Memorial HS in Brooklyn. She met Brendan “Bill” Halpin of Park Slope, Brooklyn who attended St. Augustine HS at a Catholic School dance in 1950. They married shortly after and would be for 51 years before his sudden passing in 2003. Loretta went back to school after her five children were old enough. She received her bachelors degree in education from Nassau CC and then two masters degrees, the first at Adelphi University, the second at Hofstra. She went on to become a special education teacher in the Freeport School District for almost 30 years, retiring well into her 70’s. She leaves behind four sons and their families; Brendan, wife Cathy and daughter Patricia; John and sons Brendan and Seamus; and Patrick, wife Robin and their three sons Patrick, Brian and Sean; and Kevin and Julia and their three young children Shane, Brendan and Julia. She is predeceased by her daughter Mary Teresa who left behind her daughter Colleen and her son, Granny’s great grandson, Sebastian. Granny lived near her three youngest grandchildren in Point Lookout for the last eight years of her life. Connected to Point Lookout since her teenage years by her love for the water and the beach and then later in life by mooring the family boat at the East and West Marinas. She loved nothing more than living there, babysitting and watching her grandchildren grow up. She could regularly be found at Our Lady Of The Miraculous Medal Church where she was a faithful parishioner or walking or riding her bike around the neighborhood. She so loved being part of Point Lookout’s Over-50 Club and all of her dear friends there. She also loved having a cold glass of beer at Heneghan’s, the Ale House or the Buoy Bar and reminiscing about visiting Scotty’s for more than 50 years on the boat with her family.
