Obituary for Dorrett S. Brown

Dorrett Sylvia Brown, was born on December 24th, 1923 in Lowe River, in the parish of Trelawny, Jamaica, West Indies. She was the third child of David and Miriam Brown and had five sisters Louise, Daisy, Winifred, Gertrude and Marjorie. She attended Lowe River School where she excelled in her classes and enjoyed crocheting, singing, playing the piano and participating in school plays. She prided herself on never being late for school and was awarded a prize for her perfect attendance. She had beautiful penmanship and was the teacher’s personal scribe who was responsible for writing in the roll-call book.
She had three children, Robert Watson, a retired Automotive Mechanic (Jamaica), Joan Clarke Horne, a Senior Treasury Manager (New York) and Anthony Clarke, a Senior Electrical Engineering Technologist (Ohio). She was a devoted and loving mother who worked tirelessly as a small business-owner to ensure that her children receive a quality education. In 1962, while on a visit to New York, her mother became ill; but, the quintessential care-giver that she was, compelled her to return to Jamaica to care for her mother until her death in 1966.
On April 9th, 1967, she migrated permanently to the United States to pursue a career in nursing. After attending a practical nursing school, she joined Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center in 1970 as a Nurse’s Aide, where she worked for the following 19 years. Ms. Brown dedicated her career to caring for the sick, the frail and the elderly and fulfilled her lifelong desire for helping others. She retired on December 31, 1989.
In her retirement years, she spent her time between New York, Florida and Jamaica, the three places she called home. While in Florida, she enjoyed living close to her two sisters Winifred and Gertrude, both of whom pre-deceased her. Her passions included traveling, shopping, going to church, playing bingo, watching soap-operas and taking care of her grand-children. Ms. Brown was an avid story-teller who loved to entertain her family and friends with music and dance. Although, she had a quiet demeanor, she was fiercely independent. She was supportive, dependable and her love for her family was unconditional. On January 28th 2018, she suffered a stroke and was admitted into the hospital. After eight weeks, she passed peacefully on March 27, 2018. She fought a good fight.
She is survived by her three children, Robert (Rob) and his partner Beverley, Joan and son-in-law Patrick, Anthony (Tony) and daughter-in-law Deidre; seven grandchildren, Camille, Alicia (Lisa), Andrea, Sean, Jason, Lindsay & Deven; nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Ashley, Amanda, Naomi, Samuel, Brandon, Nathan, Khalani (JJ) and Hailey; one sister, Marjorie (Gretel); three nephews, Lloyd, Lorenzo, Wayne; one niece Marcia; grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
May her soul rest in peace.
