Print
Catherine Elizabeth O'Leary, Age 77, passed away at Mercy Hospital, Rockville Center, NY on Sunday, October 7th, after a long struggle with cancer.
She was born April 15, 1941 to Catherine Carroll (County Cork, Ireland) and Dan O'Leary (County Clare, Ireland) at the US Naval Hospital, Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in Woodside, New York, she attended Catholic parochial schools and graduated from St John's University with Bachelor and Masters degrees in Education.
As an adult she lived in Woodside and Baldwin, New York and taught in the Merrick elementary school system until her retirement.
Cathy was active in the American Association of University Women and held leadership positions, including president of her local chapter. She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity to family, friends and to those less fortunate than her. She especially loved and cared for animals.
Survivors include her brother Dan O'Leary (Jamestown, RI) and sisters Margaret Diglio (Madison, CT) and Eileen Grubb (Pawleys Island, SC) and eleven nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private. A reception in her honor will be held in Baldwin, in early November with family and friends attending.
Thanks to the staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Rockville Centre, NY
