Condolence: I am proud to have been a friend of Tom since we met at Rice High School in 1967. Tom was a part of a very close group of track runners who have remained connected to the present. He ran X Country, indoor and outdoor track at Rice. He was a fierce competitor and tireless worker. He was a great friend with a warm smile and gentle, caring nature. He spoke often of his wife and son. He worked hard to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, and in so doing, he impacted the lives of more people that we can imagine. Our prayers go out to his family.
We will miss you Tom. You will remain in our hearts forever.

Condolence: I am lucky to have known Tom for over 20 years in my role as a parent of a son with autism and severe developmental disabilities, and as a
parent advocate. He was one of the brightest and kindest people I have met, particularly in the field of developmental disabilities. It is
a tremendous loss. I am very saddened. And send my thoughts and
prayers to the entire Dern family. He was there for me when my husband died three years ago, and I hope you know I am here for you in spirit as well.
